A wonderfully subtle short written and directed by Berlin-based filmmaker and photographer Vincent Boehringer. “Sinners” tells the story of two young criminals who struggle with an incident that tests the bonds of their friendship. As Boehringer explains:

“We follow them on a trip through the periphery in order to sort out their problem. However one of them obviously is struggling more with what happened and keeps on craving for a better time and place, as a form of escapism.”

“Morongo” by Novemba

A meandering depiction of the people of Morongo by Blair Macdonald and Oliver Clark of London-based Novemba Films. After months of planning and pitching different projects in LA, Macdonald and Oliver were struck by an intense desire to just “get out there and film.” Heading out into the desert in a rental car packed with camera gear, it wasn’t long before they stumbled upon a small town just past Palm Springs:

“We pulled into the gas station to grab a cool drink. Outside we met a guy playing hacky sack with mesmerising skill and intensity. He introduced himself to us as J3, and said he’d glimpsed the fifth dimension…. As the sun began to set across the valley that day, we decided we might as well stick around Morongo Valley, population 3,552. There was just something about it. This film is a depiction of the next 4 days spent in the town.”

Check out “Morongo” above as well as some photos from the project below!

Red Moon – “Dogma”

A lovely mix of visuals for Red Moon’s debut “Dogma” by London-based director Josh Thornton-Allan. Drawing on the track’s themes of living an unfiltered life, free of lies, prejudices, beliefs and social constructs, Thornton-Allan emphasizes the simplicity of feeling:

“Placing movement and choreography at the heart of the film, the bodies are removed from their physical presence and instead become symbolic. Along with choreographer Ricky Labib they built a physical language where each movement conveys certain emotions or themes and use this to create a journey as our characters learn to break down preconceived notions and become anew.”

“Fables Of An Aged Youth” by Brock Neal-Roberts

London-based director Brock Neal-Roberts asks “why do we stop being young?” in this modern twist on Grimm’s fairy tales. “Fables Of An Aged Youth” presents three vignettes inspired by true stories of moments when youth felt lost or taken. While in classic fairy tales children are constantly threatened with the mysticism of ghouls and monsters, here Neal-Roberts suggests that losing our belief in those fantastical dangers is the scarier thing.

“Wait” by Samantha Scaffidi

A long, dull wait at the hospital becomes an interminable ordeal for a woman in need of help in this moving short by Brooklyn-based writer-director Samantha Scaffidi. While the reason for her visit is unclear, the few nurses on staff tend to people with more visible injuries, giving viewers an intimate perspective into the experience of sexual assault survivors awaiting forensic exam. “Wait” was originally released as a PSA with RAINN. With this version of the film Scaffidi hopes to continue drawing attention to the obstacles faced by those seeking care and justice:

“Due to a shortage of nurses trained to collect forensic evidence, survivors of sexual violence may have to travel long distances, sometimes even out of state, to find a hospital that provides sexual assault forensic exams (commonly known as a rape kit); some wait hours for an exam.”

Black Marble – “Private Show”

Nice director’s cut of Black Marble’s “Private Show” by Los Angeles-based director and cinematographer Ben Joyner. The concept was born out of Joyner’s personal relationship with the Neshoba Country Fair in Mississippi, as he shared with us:

“It’s the United State’s largest campground fair, an abandoned southern shantytown that comes to life for one week every year at the end of July. It’s a really wild place that feels almost frozen in time. And while it’s very unique and special, it also carries some historical tension that is palpable.

The music provided a rich emotional landscape to explore the place and the people that inhabit it. The track had this immense emotional weight to it, but also felt really fun. The goal was to craft something that reflected that feeling. I loved the idea of bringing Black Marble to the fair and sort of dropping him into the middle of the spectacle.”
