Hania Rani – “F Major”

A stunning video for Polish pianist Hania Rani by Paris-based filmmaker Neels Castillon (previously featured here). “F Major” features the magnetic and meditative movements of dancers Mellina Boubetra, Janina Sarantšina, and Fanny Sage on the deserted shores of Iceland, as Castillon explains further:

“Listening to Hania’s music over and over, I began to dream of a single sequence shot that would follow her music floating in the wind of an unreal Icelandic landscape. I asked each dancer to give a personal interpretation of Hania’s song. We were very lucky to succeed in this insane artistic performance despite the great cold (minus 7 celsius), it was such a moment of truth.”

“Faces” by Patrick Taylor

An intimate exploration of the joys and challenges of being mixed race by London-based filmmaker Patrick Taylor. Of mixed heritage himself, “Faces” is a personal project for Taylor as he’s experienced firsthand how belonging to two or more cultures comes with its own unique anxieties:

“Growing up can be difficult. The body is inescapable, and so is the power that others have over it. Many mixed race individuals teeter between cultures, not feeling they belong to either. Oftentimes, they choose to identify with the country of their upbringing through ease and default. Such identity issues can leave you feeling guilty and confused. ‘Who am I? What am I?’ These questions run deep. I felt it important to explore these elements as part of the healing process, to finally close the gap on who I am, and why I am.”

Premiere: “Don’t Water The Vine” by Ian Bousher & Theo Gee

A delightfully absurdist short by London-based filmmaking duo Ian Bousher and Theo Gee (previously featured here). “Don’t Water The Vine” follows an ambitious young architect who struggles to hold his life together as he starts uncontrollably producing grapes from his mouth. Offering something of an open-ended meditation on anxiety, the idea for the film actually came from a dream Bousher had where he suffered the same affliction:

“You know those dreams where you turn up to something important naked? It was like that, except without nudity and with grapes slipping out of my mouth. Okay, it wasn’t like the nudity dream at all but it WAS related to anxiety. I think.

Because people telling you about their dreams is never annoying, I told it to Theo and it stuck in his head. That externalisation of anxiety was saying something, and we slowly realised that we had to make this both for us to understand that anxiety better and because it’s something that so many people grapple with. And now we can’t eat grapes anymore, so… Great.”
