“Baby Birds” by LEONELRUBEN

Lots of beautifully haunting visuals in this short piece by directing duo Leonel Dietsche and Ruben Meier aka LEONELRUBEN (previously featured here). “Baby Birds” reimagines a surreal world where children and young people dominate a self-contained underworld with adults only visiting as safari-esque tourists.

“They don’t seem to understand its rules anymore, but they are frightened and fascinated by its roughness. Will this new generation stay there or will they rebel?”

Klaus Layer – “Eternal Visions”

Nice energy to this video by director Dominik Galizia. Shot over the course of two weeks in Berlin, “Eternal Visions” follows Oumi Janta and Behailu Schaller jamskating through Berlin to Klaus Layer’s summery track. As Galizia states:

“We wanted to capture Berlin during this strange Summer of 2020 in an urban and a nature environment…. It seems like a strange dream on a lost summer day. The 16mm film enhances this nostalgic feeling, but there is no nostalgia, there is nothing forgotten and nothing lost. It’s right there, right now.”

“Man-Spider” by Tom Oxenham

Writer-director Tom Oxenham offers up a clever twist on a classic superhero narrative. Starring Harry Michell and Liz Kingsman (previously featured here), “Man-Spider” sheds light on the other, far more mundane half of the Spiderman equation:

“Everyone knows the Spiderman story: man gets bitten by spider, gets spider powers, becomes hero. But radioactive metamorphosis is a two-way street. So what about the spider who bit Peter Parker? What ever became of him?”

Joshual – “Devil Gaze”

Two young men share a moment of intimacy in this lovely debut video for singer-songwriter Joshual by Brazilian director Fernando Nogari (previously featured here). Produced by Iconoclast, “Devil Gaze” was shot in São Paulo by cinematographer Maurício Padilha and features choreography and performances by Weslley Baiano and Marcos Oliveira. As Nogari shares further:

“When I heard Joshual’s track, the first thing that caught my imagination, was the atmospheric aspect of it. It narrates the story of a young boy struggling with his first-love emotions. Joshual himself is only 19 years old and our conversations reminded me of my own teenage years, when I used to spend the afternoons at my parent’s home, brawling with my feelings. Those years had a significant impact on my personality. I struggled with accepting my sexuality and spent time deconstructing patterns of masculinity that were expected of me. I wanted this film to capture a small snippet of one of those days —- days where we allow ourselves to break the box we are shaped into and, in turn, share a sensitive and intimate moment with someone we have a connection with, beyond any prejudice or stereotype. Moments of love and freedom.”

Jeannel – “I Can Make It Better”

Great look to this video for Jeannel by Berlin-based director Felix Aaron (previously featured here). Shot on 16mm by cinematographer Julian Jonas Schmitt, “I Can Make It Better” traces the emotional journey of the artist through an abstract narrative based on classic tarot card symbolism. The Spiritual Guidance Spread helps to illuminate the artist’s possible path from the present to a desired future based on eight cards. Each card is presented as a painting-like vignette styled to harken back to the traditional design of the original cards.
