Florda – “Brave Little Soldier”

An ambitious stop-motion clay animation for Montréal-based band Florda by Milan-based artist Gaia Alari. Told through small flashes like old slides, “Brave Little Soldier” spans the entire lifetime of a clay boy, from the beginning of his life to the end. As Alari shared with us:

“while time passes by, technology gets more and more important and normalised in the daily routine, yet somehow humans keep running in circle.”

Another Sky – “Chillers”

A young car wash attendant struggles to make a living in this video for London band Another Sky by Lebanese-American director Najeeb Tarazi. Set in Los Angeles, where Tarazi is based, “Chillers” stars Jonni Truelove, a non-actor street cast from within the cycling community. Prioritizing a lead with a true ease and intimacy with his bike, Tarazi further explains:

“People think of LA as a car city but there is a huge population of young people who rely on bicycles to get around. The band and I felt that it would be a striking contrast to set a song about the hollow striving of Hollywood to a video about a broke young man who works at a car wash and dreams of fixing his bike.”

“Ride or Die” by Zeke Farrow

Two friends’ attempt to escape The Apocalypse doesn’t quite go as planned in this comical short by writer and director Zeke Farrow. Combining the most dramatic circumstances imaginable, with a group of people completely incapable of dealing with it, the idea for the film emerged from actual conversations between Farrow and his friends back in December 2016. As he recalls:

“Trump had just been elected and it was Christmas party season in Los Angeles! High anxiety was in the breezy desert air. As I caught up with friends and acquaintances over eggnog and bourbon, the conversation kept turning to Apocalypse escape plans. What will we do? How will we get out of LA? Where will we meet? Whose car will we take? The more I had the conversation, the more outlandish the plan I would suggest. This was the seed of the idea for Ride or Die – a super awkward social situation which was a reasonable inevitability given drunken Christmas party hypotheticals.”

vōx – “ether”

A short musical fashion piece from Los Angeles-based artist vōx and director Grant Spanier of DAD® (previously featured here). Emerging organically through a sense of mutual admiration, the collaboration resulted in the short film as well as an accompanying series of still photographs. As Spanier states:

“Her aesthetics visually and sonically is so beautiful to me… sort of intimidating and inviting all at once. And I had a vision for the intersection of the themes and aesthetics of our work. At that meeting point — between warm filmic nostalgia and her cool elegance — these images were born. The short film portion features music from vōx and was shot on super 8mm film. The photos were all shot on 6×6 120mm film. This is the first collaboration of many between us, I hope.”

Ateph Elidja – “Burn October”

Stunning work by directing duo Ed Braun and Justo Dell Acqua (aka WACHO) from Argentina. Created for Paris-based producer Ateph Elidja, “Burn October” tells the story of life, death and grief in a small Polish settlement in the Argentinean jungle. As Braun shared with us:

“Misiones Province is located in the far north of Argentina, inside the Amazonian jungle. It shares borders with Brazil and Paraguay. All through the second half of the 20th century a lot of Ukrainian, Polish and German families arrived to this area creating colonies and small villages scattered through the jungle, area of the aborigine guarani tribe. In this condition they generated a hybrid culture. We wanted to explore this very improbable culture, especially the idea of death and after-life.”

Halima – “If Love Was Green”

Lovely shots in this video for singer-songwriter Halima’s track “If Love Was Green” by New York City-based director Nina Gofur.

“The concept behind the video is mimicking the stages of turning into a butterfly. You start out bare, in a cocoon and slowly grow into this very beautiful and elusive creature. That is how I see Halima, and other womxn as well. Carrying on our shoulders the power passed down by the generations of womxn before us. In this video, Halima’s Great Great Grandmother’s hands move her into a realm of self discovery and empowerment.”

A brilliant set of numerical observations by New York City-based designer and animator Gung-Kai Koo. Inspired by all the interesting shapes we encounter on a daily basis, Koo draws attention to the shape of numbers through a series of 40 animated gifs. As he explains:

“By living in NYC there are different kinds of people with different personalities, careers, tastes and lifestyles. I started making numbers design with illustrations of different character’s close-up while observing the variety of the people and surroundings in the city”
