“eggshell” by Case Jernigan

A really unique stop-motion short by Brooklyn-based artist and animator Case Jernigan (previously featured here). Composed from paper cutouts, paint on plastic and cereal box sculptures, “eggshell” is the result of a panic attack that lasted two days and Jernigan’s ongoing effort to get to know himself better:

“My work is about compartmentalization, about being an artist or dreamer amid the rigid formal tenets of churches and schools. I make imagery from anxious childhood moments. Feeling scared at night, covers pulled overhead. Trapped between powerful authority figures and propelled down an accepted path of behavior and belief. I make artwork about bullies, hero worship, religious fervor, and yearning.”

A stunning black and white video for French duo Neumodel’s track with Kiddy Smile directed by Paris-based filmmaker and photographer Axel Morin. Danny Brown – “3 Tearz” feat. Run The Jewels

Great energy to this video for Danny Brown and Run The Jewels, directed and edited by New York City-based filmmaker Colin Read (previously featured here). “3 Tearz” is a multi-perspective journey of the most intimate underground performance Read could dream up, as he states:

“We handed out over two dozen cameras of various formats to the fans—orchestrating fisheye lens barrel rolls and “shitty Matrix” camera moves along the way—and let their footage and photos help drive the video.”

“I’ll say it first” by Alena Shevchenko

A fun visual collage from Moscow-based director Alena Shevchenko. “I’ll say it first” tells the story of a girl who wants to text a boy, but hesitates to make the first move. The dialogue combines excerpts from Shevchenko’s personal diaries as well as improvisations from actress Diana Helzina’s reflections on her own romantic relationships. While capturing the contradictory inner thoughts and fleeting confidence of young love, the short film is also a meditation on technology, particularly as it relates the Russian setting. Shevchenko explains: “I wanted to face modern digital world and old soviet flat as a metaphor that technology changes but dreams stay the same.”

Premiere: “Perisher” by Gabriel Francis

A delightfully deadpan short written and directed by Melbourne-based filmmaker Gabriel Francis. “Perisher” is Gabriel’s graduate film from the Victorian College of the Arts and has screened at the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival as well as the Melbourne International Film Festival. It tells the story of a high school graduate, a geologist, and a retired racehorse who face uncertain futures in a small town. As Gabriel explains, the film is a mediation on times of transition and the changes that come to us unexpectedly:

“It deals with a feeling of paralysis; when all that grounds you seems to be shifting. I was very lucky to work with our lead, Shingo Usami (The Terror: Infamy, 2019). He uses subtle expression in his body language so effectively for this mostly silent role.”
