“Saoirse” by Marion Bergin

Dublin-born filmmaker Marion Bergin delves into the controversial pastime of inner-city horse culture. While the equestrian legacy of Dublin’s working-class has often been marginalized and negatively portrayed in the media, “Saoirse” offers a snapshot of some of the men who genuinely care about their animals and their struggle to keep this unique aspect of the city from being erased by new property development and gentrification. As Bergin states:

“Toxic masculinity is something the media has made synonymous with inner-city culture. I chose to shine a different light on these men, to portray them as I saw them — normal people with warm hearts and the same concerns for their futures and families as the rest of us.”

Sam Lynch – “Keeping Time”

Some lovely cinematography in this self-directed video from Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Sam Lynch. Filmed on the unceded Indigenous lands of the Katzie, Stó:lō, Coast Salish, and Kwikwetlem First Nations, the track is set against the simple opposing backdrops of confined domesticity and vast natural landscape:

“My aim with the ‘Keeping Time’ video was to simply convey and juxtapose feelings of confinement, stillness, and stagnation against those of freedom, motion, and release.”

“My Neighbor, Miguel” by Danny Navarro

A wonderful documentary short about an exuberant 72 year-old gay artist named Miguel by San Francisco-based filmmaker Danny Navarro. More than just a tribute to Navarro’s friend and former landlord, “My Neighbor, Miguel” offers a personalized archive of the AIDs epidemic as Miguel reflects on art, community, and life after another such isolating time that affected the entire world.

“Miguel was my former landlord in San Francisco. Each month, I would see him hang beautiful art pieces outside of my living room window which faced Mcallister Street for all to see. I fell in love with these pieces and became fascinated with their elusive maker who donned a thick Colombian accent and handlebar moustache. Over time, Miguel and I became friends which is how I learned about the story behind his art and how delicately intertwined it was to his past.”

Pale Moon – “Stranger”

Two strangers appear to share the same mysterious affliction in this subtly surreal video for Pale Moon by Barcelona-based director Carles Pons Altimira (previously featured here).

“Framed in a dystopian world, “Stranger” works as a portrait of the moment in which a thing, that has always been like that, becomes something else. We can sometimes be more aware of others than of ourselves, and it is exactly when we take a look inside that magical things happen.”

“Form, Space and Chaos” by Karim Shaaban

A portrait of Cairo during heavy rain and little shine by director Karim Shaaban. “Form, Space and Chaos” takes us on a journey through different neighbourhoods while the Egyptian painter, Salah Taher, shares his views about the city on the radio. As Shaaban states:

“The weather is a metaphor to the chaos my underprepared city and its dwellers have to experience when the ‘unexpected’ happens, in contrast to the usual chaos that is the city itself.”

Gracie and Rachel – “Sidelines” (Mature)

Beautiful video for Gracie and Rachel directed by New York City-based cinematographer Andrea Gavazzi (previously featured here). “Sidelines” centres around Gracie and Rachel’s family friend Connie, as she speaks openly about the sudden and tragic loss of her lifelong partner, Danny. A testament to the strength of human attachment, Connie’s intimate recollections are intertwined with footage of relationships at all stages of love. As Gavazzi states:

“Something that has always struck me is how time affects memories and the way we perceive a past event in our life. The more time passes, the more our memory selects random bits to keep. We can’t completely understand why these memories are so clear, why that moment and not another one, and I don’t even think we question it; it just feels right, it feels it represents the essence of us, so we hold on to that instant. ‘Sidelines’ is not about what we could have done differently, but how we will do it differently in the future or next time.”
