Lovely video for Pillow Queens by director Kate Dolan (previously featured here). In an effort to challenge the kind of hyper-sexualized depictions of queer desire so often presented through the male gaze, “Holy Show” captures the joyful intimacy between queer women through a female lens. As Dolan explains further:
“Myself and the girls are all queer so when they asked me to direct something for Holy Show we all felt it was time that we made a video that had some positive queer representation…. In parts of the video you see these women in isolated spaces without each other. For me this can be interpreted two ways. You could say that they are remembering this road trip as something from their past that they are feeling nostalgic about. But I also like to think that in those scenes those women haven’t met yet and the visions of the road trip are them projecting their desires. I remember as a teenager, before I was fully out, I would often reassure myself that one day I would be free to go where I wanted, to do what I wanted and that I would find someone who loved me as much as I loved them. Those thoughts really kept me going in dark times and I guess I wanted to capture that feeling.”
