Profile: Charlotte Keates’ “The Kennedy Trip”

A beautiful portrait of London-based artist Charlotte Keates by director and photographer Ian Froome. Set to a reading of a poem rumoured to be written by Marilyn Monroe for JFK, “The Kennedy Trip” chronicles the source material and inspiration of Keates’ latest body of work — a box of 100 Kodachrome slides Keates received in the mail from Florida, depicting Palm Springs and the Racquet Club in the 50s and 60s.

Emily Jackson – “Oh Mother”

Brooklyn based writer-director Jamie Dack captures the beauty of the mundane in this photography-inspired video for Emily Jackson. As Dack shared with us about her approach to the project:

“I had been taking portraits of Emily in New York for the last two years as well as photographing and directing films set against the backdrop of a specific neighborhood in San Diego. For this video, I wanted to combine these two things that inspired me: Emily and these bleak yet beautiful locations. I wanted it to feel like a series of moving portraits and Emily’s movements within the frame, as well as the camera movements, really elevated that concept.”

“__ /__ /__” by Claudia Barral

A beautiful exploration of the limits and courses of time by Madrid-based director Claudia Barral. Inspired by Richard McGuire’s book Here, “__ / __ / __” visualizes the ellipses of time as occurring simultaneously, evoking memories within “the same spacial coordinates.” As Barral states:

“Usually, going from one shoot to another involves the passage of time (a second, a minute, a year…) It reflects in a delicate way these ellipses where things that we don’t see happen and, at the same time, lead us from one situation to another in a more or less linear manner. What happens if we maintain this still space and we let time pass but always in the same place?”

Branded: “Extraordinary Normality” by Federico Mazzarisi

A lovely spot in support of Breast Cancer Awareness by London-based director Federico Mazzarisi (previously featured here). Produced by the National Film and Television School, “Extraordinary Normality” features a mastectomy bra specially designed for breast cancer survivors by Stella McCartney, whose own mother died from the disease in 1998.

“It tells the time span that embraces the life of a woman from the moment that precedes learning the hard news of a diagnosis of positivity to cancer, to the newfound “normality.” Her emotional development is in crescendo and reaches its climax when words are followed fast, chasing and follow the thread of light that leads to the rebirth and reconquest of the emotional state, apparently, but only apparently, more obvious: that of ‘normality.’ An extraordinary normality.”

Anenon – “Tongue”

A poetic series of visuals for Brian Allen Simon (aka Anenon) by Los Angeles-based director Andrew Gura (previously featured here). Bonding over the difficulty of describing Brian’s music to people who had never heard it, the project evolved as an effort to translate the atmospheric texture of the album and the imagery it inspires in the listener.

While initially dabbling with the idea of filming in Mexico and featuring the architecture of Luis Barragán, the decision was ultimately made to establish continuity with their two previous collaborations and remain “emotionally resonant” within the city of Los Angeles. Cinematographer Jake Bianco (previously featured here) became the final piece that set the final look in motion. Describing him as the “perfect collaborator,” Andrew explains:

“Jake came up with ways to approach the project, bringing out the texture of the image using Panavision’s famed C-Series anamorphic lenses from the late 1960s, mixed with later Panavision spherical lenses, stabilized camera support that could be discreetly driven around Los Angeles, and plenty of floaty, freehand camera motion. Jake, Brian and I roamed around Los Angeles for several days, capturing bits and pieces as we found them.”
