“Invaders” by Daniel Prince

A seasonal sci-fi animation by London-based director Daniel Prince. Reminiscent of 80’s classics like Batteries Not Included, “Invaders” follows a small UFO as he struggles to impress and befriend two other, seemingly more advanced UFOs.

Documentary: “Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future”

A wonderful documentary short about Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. Born in Stockholm in 1862, af Klint strove to express concepts beyond what the eye can see, creating radically abstract paintings years before her better-known contemporaries Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. Choosing to keep much of her groundbreaking work private during her lifetime, directors Ted Gerike and Felipe Lima explore the hidden legacy of the mysterious artist in honour of the “Hima af Klint: Paintings for the Future” exhibition currently on display at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

“A Bride & A Groom” by Christian Cerezo

Another creative short from writer-director Christian Cerezo (previously featured here). “A Bride & A Groom” tells the story of a woman literally born wearing a wedding dress and a man who suffers from a related condition. According to Cerezo:

“I didn’t know how to write until I started writing about things that have personally happened to me, and about feelings that I have personally felt. That’s just to say – no matter how ridiculous the premise of the film may seem… it all basically actually happened.”

Premiere: “Planet of plastic” by Robin Günther

Swedish director Robin Günther offers a unique visualization of a timely topic. Opening with a wide shot of a large, unknown shape — something between a planet and a womb — a silhouetted figure moves to the resounding truths we can no longer afford to ignore. As Günther states:

“Even if there is lots of news with pictures of dead sea life, beaches filled with single-use plastic items, documentaries of plastic islands bigger than countries that are floating around in the oceans; it is hard to grasp the width. This film is an emotional journal based on those facts. I would like to tell the story in a new way. Pushing the way of traditional storytelling. Invite you to get involved with something that is visually both beautiful and frightening, alien-like and human, synthetic and natural. And hopefully, offer a new perspective.”

A beautiful-yet-unsettling exploration of the artistic process of six actors by writer-director Marc Ortiz. Featuring music from Barcelona-based musicians NUU, “Ophelia” revolves around the myth of Shakespeare’s fateful character and is described as neither a music video nor a short film but, simply, “the suicide of a song.” Warning: this video contains depictions of suicide.

Golden Vessel – “Moonstone” feat. Elkkle & Akurei

Really enjoy the styling of this video for Australian artist Max Byrne, aka Golden Vessel. Collaborating once again with London/Melbourne-based director Harry Deadman, “Moonstone” offers a charming re-enactment of a fake moon landing. The song is inspired by real-world events, specifically the 1998 US federal investigation into missing moon rocks from the Apollo 11 mission. Initially distributed around the world as part of the Goodwill Moon Rocks initiative, 30 years later the specimens had largely vanished and become untraceable. While in studio with his friends Byrne’s recalls:

“I started telling them about the stolen moonstones and then morphed it into a metaphor for a conversation we were having earlier about missed opportunities and when we or friends miss out on something that should’ve been in reach (and the frustration around that). The stolen moonstones became the missed opportunities and we all started writing. We tried to sneak a few references from the different stories around stolen moon rocks into the song such as mentioning Joseph Gutheinz who was a NASA special agent tasked with recovering the missing rocks.”

Sofie Winterson – “Time”

A beautiful exploration of the rhythms of love by Amsterdam-based director Danny Griffioen for Sofie Winterson’s track “Time.” Featuring great work by cinematographer Douwe Hennink (previously featured here), Griffioen describes the project as a portrait of the different phases of an unhealthy relationship:

“In the beginning, it feels like the love is infinite: lovers have no awareness of the concept of time. Which doesn’t last forever. The love and trust that was built are withered by two estranged strangers. The urge to destroy is present and hope is lost. Time feels lost again.”
