Premiere: “Ethiopia, a visual diary” by Matej Balaz & Cole Graham

Last Fall director Matej Balaz and cinematographer Cole Graham shot the documentary, “Letisha’s Well,” for Run For Water, a non-profit organization bringing clean water to communities in Ethiopia. While that film followed a local family as they inaugurated wells and schools in the name of their daughter, Balaz and Graham were left with many portraits and pieces that couldn’t be fit into the original project. Ever since, the two have wanted to cut together something from the B-roll footage — an ode to the people and places that made such a lasting impression on them. As Graham explains further:

“What makes this film different, is that it’s not full of sad, heart throbbing visuals that we’re used to seeing of Ethiopia, and that’s important. It’s difficult for people in the west to psychologically connect with African countries if all we ever see is sad people in extreme poverty.”

“Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” by Sunday Emerson Gullifer

A poignant and timely short by Sydney-based filmmaker Sunday Emerson Gullifer. Featuring a beautiful performance by Matilda Ridgway, “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” follows a working theatre actor who starts to question her calling when she plays Lady Macduff in an increasingly violent production of Macbeth. The film’s epigraph comes from a piece in The Guardian on the ‘boys club’ of theatre where Ridgway reflects on an incisive remark she made during a Q&A in Canberra for Hamlet:

“Well, as a female actress you get really good at crying and taking your clothes off—sort of like how the male actors get really good at sword fighting and having all the dialogue.”

Premiere: “Pineapple” by Patrick Golan

A poetic short from New York City-based cinematographer Patrick Golan. While we’ve featured a lot of Golan’s work in the past (click here for previous posts), this one is a bit more personal. After writing the initial script in his spare time, Golan approached actors and friends he’d worked with on other projects, eventually coming up with locations and evolving his initial ideas, all while in LA for a separate shoot. As Golan shares:

“We scouted the locations over a few days, and shot everything in two days with the equipment I’d been left with from this other project. Just me and the actors, finding all these lovely little moments as we ran from location to location around Santa Monica and Malibu. It was all very organic, the concept growing and changing as we shot and stumbled upon new things. It was a beautiful experience.”
