A fantastic portrait of Tofino-based surfer Kalum Bruhwiler Temple and the legacy of the Bruhwiler family by Québec-born, California-based filmmaker Benoit Lalande (previously featured here). Pioneers of Canadian surfing, “Primitive” combines footage of Kalum with the voice of his grandmother, Gisele Bruhwiler, who moved to Tofino when the now renowned surf town was nothing more than a small fishing village. Despite speaking a different language and being generations apart, Gisele and Kalum share an unconditional love for the ocean and a lifestyle of foraging for food and living off the grid that’s largely been lost with changing times. Check out “Primitive” above as well as some behind-the-scenes images from the shoot below!
