Mada Mada – “Autonome”

Montréal-based filmmaker Alexandre Richard tells the tale of a self-exiled writer, crumbling under the weight of solitude, in this video for Mada Mada. Starring dancer and choreographer Charles-Alexis Desgagnés, “Autonome” is set in 1954 and captures an artist confronting his inner demons and memories of the loved ones he abandoned in order to pursue his dreams in “the big city” of Montréal. As Richard states further:

“Although isolation, depression and loneliness have become all-too familiar feelings due COVID-19 and the misery left in its wake, “Autonome” was conceived a year prior to our current predicament. The thought that this story of self-doubt, lost love and broken dreams rings so true today is both coincidental and a testament to the universality of its themes.”

Katarzia – “Hoří i voda”

Lots of great visuals in this video for Slovak singer-songwriter Katarzia by Prague-based director Jay Walker (previously featured here). While set in a dystopian world, “Hoří i voda” offers a timely reflection on the concerns women in Eastern Europe are currently facing:

“As assaults are waged by political and religious institutions to limit female bodily autonomy, women find themselves in a social limbo: constantly displaced, powerless in front of institutions, and at the short end of rage-fuelled rhetoric. A call to arms for women everywhere to hold on to each other, lift each other up and help each other heal our collective, generational pain.”

Carlota Flâneur – “Generation of the Young Flesh”

Love all the different poses and gestures in this charming video for Carlota Flâneur’s track “Generation of the Young Flesh” by Barcelona-based director Carles Pons Altimira (previously featured here). According to Carles, the visuals are meant to reflect the repetition and automatism encouraged by modern society as we witness Carlota adapting to all sorts of situations and environments with the same attitude:

“Generation of the young flesh represents a generation that has been born into a new world, in which new things are short-lived and cost nothing, and like things, people. With the great help of Ariadna Montfort we have translated these traumas into looped movements that, performed in front of large colored frames, help to stage the absurd theater in which society pushes us to play.”

“Ebulição” by Lu Villaça

A young woman teeters on the edge of epiphany and madness in this lovely project by Brazilian director Lu Villaça. “Ebulição” captures some of the thoughts and feelings Villaça confronted during social distancing measures, including questioning her own existence and how she had been living her life prior to the pandemic. For Villaça, this time should be seen as an opportunity for learning more about ourselves, insights she hopes won’t be forgotten after the virus is controlled:

“May we have the courage to hear our thousands voices when the world is silent.
Was 2020 a call? Are we going to honor it and take responsibility for the life we are living or are we going to ignore it in the rush of hours, money and greed?”

DouleurDolor – “Sé de un Lugar” (NSFW)

Great energy to this video for DouleurDolor’s new single by Madrid-based writer-director Joaquín Luna. “Sé de un Lugar” was composed during the global pandemic and offers a reflection on the range of emotions experienced throughout quarantine — from the fear of losing loved ones to rethinking relationships and the everyday concerns of life. Building from DouleurDolor’s theme, Luna created a visual narrative based on his personal perspective on time and the marks that different loved ones have left in his life:

“Time passes, the clock hands don’t stop ticking, and don’t turn back. We didn’t either. We still have to close our eyes. Blurred experiences and clear memories join three people in this music video.”
