Premiere: “Hou’ley” by Alexander Sworik

A heartbreaking look at the effects of limited mental health support in remote First Nations communities by Canadian director Alexander Sworik (previously featured here). Fond du Lac is a Dene First Nations community in northern Saskatchewan. The name quite literally translates to “Bottom of the Lake” and has one of the highest suicide rates among youth in Canada. With “Hou’ley” (Absent), Sworik shares the story of Cynthia, a mother grieving the untimely death of her fifteen year old son, in the hopes of drawing attention to an issue that too often goes unspoken. While it has been nearly three years since her loss, Cynthia still has yet to deal with the trauma her family as experienced.

“The medium of film is a powerful tool to help provoke change. Documentaries specifically provide an unadulterated glimpse into the realities of people who do not always get the chance to be heard or seen. As soon as I found out I could be involved in this project, I jumped at the chance. It’s an important Canadian story to tell, one that is so common among remote First Nations communities but one that does not very often get told. My hope is that through this film, you learn about a grim side of the Canadian experience really hearing Cynthia’s story and feeling the reality of so many families in the community. If enough people hear these stories, then I believe change can happen and these communities can get the support the need and deserve.”

shame – “Water in the Well”

Infectious energy to this video for shame by director Pedro Takahashi. “Water in the Well” is about the technological advancements of the 21st century that made it possible to be in multiple places at the same time. Thanks to some kinetic camera moves and hyper stylized editing, the band appears to jump back and forth between different locations as a way of reflecting the disorientation of modern day life.

“Chromascope” by Gonzalo Hergueta (Mature)

A vibrant portrait of Barcelona-based photographer Olga De La Iglesia by New York City-based filmmaker Gonzalo Hergueta. “Chromascope” tells the story of Olga’s artistic journey, specifically her unique approach to colour, inspired by the three years she spent living in the Caribbean. The film was shot in the summer of 2019, and while life in NYC can be notoriously gray, Gonzalo tapped Spanish cinematographer Javier Diaz to help capture the 5 boroughs as one might see it through Olga’s eyes.

Low Island – “In Your Arms”

Lovely animation for Low Island directed and illustrated by Patrick Atkins. While the track explores the theme of growing up — mourning people as they move on with the changing times — there’s hope among the chaos of loss too. As singer Carlos Posada shares:

“‘In Your Arms’ is a love letter to my childhood bedroom. It’s about how objects or spaces that are important to us can get tangled up in our past and present, and how the memories and emotions they evoke can both comfort us and weigh us down. I find this to be particularly true of spaces we associate with childhood — they are heavy, often with so many contradictory feelings which complicates our relationship with them. This combination of comfort and oppression through nostalgia was at the heart of the conversations we had with Patrick about the video.”

JWLKER – “Orange & Blues”

A love letter to humanity’s relationship with nature for JWLKER by director Dustin Tan. Inspired by French New Wave and the works of Jim Jarmusch, “Orange and Blues” is Tan’s response to the despair and hopelessness of this past year:

“Many of the filming locations burned up in a wildfire soon after shooting, which has made me view this film under a different lens — as a cautionary tale on climate change.”

Great energy to this video for Barcelona band Sandré by director Carles Pons Altimira (previously featured here). Poking fun at all the small mundanities that dictate our lives, “Presión” is described as “a cry to the world, a cry to the wheel in which we are stuck without questioning it, a spit that comes out of your mouth and ends up on the sleeve of your shirt.”

“Trainride” by Zen Pace

The golden age of song-and-dance style storytelling gets a contemporary refresh with this charming video by New York City-based director and activist Zen Pace. “Androgyne” by Sebastian Hill-Esbrand

French-Caribbean youth, Sasha Timmer, expresses the need to break from the patriarchal norms of gender and identity in this short documentary profile by Vancouver-based Sebastian Hill-Esbrand:

“Lola and I crossed paths as housemates when we first landed in Vancouver. As our friendship developed, we discovered Lola’s blood is 1⁄4 Caribbean and 3⁄4 French. While my blood is 1⁄4 Australian and 3⁄4 Caribbean. Lola is caucasian in passing, and I’m black with an Australian accent. The shared quirks in our identities allowed us to form a magnetic creative bond. We talked about the patriarchal influence that is cast over Caribbean culture and how, in many ways, we are so distant from the cultures inside us. The week before her return to Belgium, we decided we wanted to create a project that pays homage to the belonging we found in ourselves through travelling.”

“Pivot” by Tarona

A visual meditation on the notion of Black performance in white spaces by Rotterdam-based artist and filmmaker Tarona. Featuring dancer Chanel Vyent, “Pivot” operates as an act of defiance against the white gaze not just by claiming space but by taking time for rest and stillness. Throughout her research Tarona confronted the philosophy of how Black bodies always appear to be in movement or ‘doing something.’ In other words, never idle or standing at rest. As she states:

“The character in this film defies the general expectation – by gradually slowing down into rest, into stillness and — therefore — into resistance.”
