Surma – “Wanna Be Basquiat”

An engrossing experimental video for Surma by Portuguese artist and animator João Pombeiro (previously featured here). Built over the audio track, “Wanna Be Basquiat” follows an abstract narrative about industrial and suburban development, and the dream of prosperity, using hundreds of clippings from vintage images and film.

Pillow Queens – “Brothers”

Two friends stumble upon a device that freezes time in this lovely video by director Kate Dolan for Pillow Queens’ track “Brothers.” While initially using their newfound power for fun, they soon risk losing one another as it drives them apart:

“The lyrics in the verses show quick snapshots of the aftermath from a loss of a friend within a very tight knit group. An element of fear runs through the song as this sudden death makes you look around your group and feel terrified of the chances of another. It touches on a shared grief which drives you to hold dear the memories and moments you have with each other. While this song can be considered one about mourning, it’s ultimately about the intense love you have for your chosen family.”

Battles – “Fort Greene Park”

A fun video for Battles by New York City-based filmmaker Colin Read (previously featured here). “Fort Greene Park” explores the evolution of solo locomotion, featuring 20 different forms of transport from crawling on all fours to wheeled vehicles and more! The project came together on a small budget with a mix of planning and improvisation over the course of just two days. As Read shared with us:

“In the initial discussions with the band, they said that they wanted to avoid it feeling silly or too funny. But I think they started to love how ridiculous the concept was, and soon were throwing out ideas like ‘Let’s get some close-up of me blowing bubble gum!’ And once we were at the actual shoot, it was just so surreal and insane that everyone embraced the madness. But in the end, I think the video rides a nice line of being fun and bizarre while still pointing toward something more focused and meaningful.”

Premiere: Alaskan Tapes – “And, We Disappear”

A poetic meditation on life and death for Alaskan Tapes by Brooklyn-based director Meredith Hama-Brown (previously featured here). Beautifully shot on 4-Perf 35mm by cinematographer Norm Li, csc, “And, We Disappear” explores a woman’s mysterious journey to her afterlife. Taking place at the very moment of her passing, the narrative follows the woman’s transition from wandering confusedly through her small town to arriving at a tiny island in the middle of the ocean. It is here that she finds a baby, lying on its own. As Hama-Brown explains further:

“Although I am not religious in any way, and this story doesn’t represent my beliefs, I was fascinated by the idea of a soul needing to complete some unknown task as it leaves the body. I was very compelled by the idea of a woman needing to take her eldest and youngest self, as a unit, into the afterlife. What I wanted to capture in this film was the feeling that she experiences during this journey; a feeling of being in a space that is both familiar yet unfamiliar, dreamlike and yet still real to her.”
