Stunning work from cinematographer Bryn McCashin. Shot during a traditional “Vampa Di San Giuseppe” in the ancient market of Ballarò, in Palermo, Sicily, this short visual piece aims to bring out the visceral feeling of facing one of nature’s wildest forces.

“Traditionally the ‘Vampa’ is an offering to the patron saint Joseph, and a symbol of the passage from winter into spring. More importantly it seems, it is a chance for the community to come together and celebrate, while the adolescent boys who build the pyre use it as a chance to test limits and build bonds. The atmosphere that all of this creates is a joyful tension, walking the line between a riot and a celebration.”
