Premiere: Rothstein – “Get Your Shit Together”

Great look and feel to this video for Rothstein by Barcelona-born director and photographer Yago Hunt-Laudi and Moscow-based director of photography Konstantin Mazov. Drawing inspiration from contemporary European fashion films and American youth culture, “Get Your Shit Together” offers a raw and refreshing account of adolescence, redemption and risk taking. As Yago states:

“I think we are fundamentally social beings, and prolonged isolation, especially in circumstances where it is not by choice, can atrophy our minds in strange ways. Loneliness can be so vast and overwhelming, like the sensation of sinking into deep water, and it can either drive people to action, or cause them to sink further into their solitude. The character in our film choses the former, acting out on impulse and in effect saving himself. This is ultimately what I’d like for people to take away from the piece: that it can be frightening to act on intuition, but it can also lead somewhere beautiful.”

Vancouver Biennale Vignettes by Dylan Maranda

A gorgeous set of vignettes supporting Vancouver Biennale by Vancouver-based director Dylan Maranda of KIDDO Films. Featuring stunning cinematography by Cole Graham (previously featured here), the three-part series is a direct response to the art-focused non-profit’s newest installations. Like the theme of the exhibition itself, Maranda encourages viewers to “re-IMAGE-n” each work, offering up his own interpretive lens and medium as a way of bringing the deeply personal experience of public art to life. As he explains:

“I really wanted to recreate the feeling of ingesting a work of public art in the film format. Often times you experience these pieces without context, and a beautiful ambiguity that allows everyone to apply their own emotional experience to the work. I chose to base surreal vignettes on only the titles of included works without receiving context on the new art itself to reflect this subjectivity. If you have any sort of response to the pieces, that’s all I can ask for as a filmmaker! An extra special thank you to those that worked on this and to Cole Graham’s incredible cinematography that made these pieces come to life.”

Profile: “In the Space Between Ages”

A meditative portrait by Austin-based filmmaker Travis Lee Ratcliff (previously featured here). Turning his attention to Irish sculptor and educator Dony Mac Manus — an artist who rejects the ugliness of contemporary art and returns, instead, to the ideals of the renaissance —  Ratcliff states:

“Dony’s work and thinking seem to raise a set of questions about our experience of time and our sense of place in it. How do we navigate the past, tradition, and form our identity in the present in response to these forces? These were the ideas I wanted to explore in this film.”

Benjamin Francis Leftwich – “Gratitude”

A gorgeous portrait of rejuvenation by London-based director and photographer Harvey Pearson. Created for English singer-songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich, “Gratitude” was shot at Loch Doine, Scotland in a single take. The 35mm film follows a distressed young man (Connor Newall) as he works to confront the things that are holding him back. As Pearson explains:

“A couple of months ago, Ben sent me ‘Gratitude’, a beautiful and honest track which I instantly connected with. Hearing this track and the story it tells led to a discussion between us about everyone’s personal struggles with inner demons and how they affect everyone individually. This is a film about letting go, a turning point, making peace with your past and moving forward.”
