Director Joe Wheatley offers up a little slow cinema for Billie Marten. Of the concept he says, “I was inspired by images which Billie’s photographer, Katie Silvester, had shot of hackney marshes with people just being at peace with a kind of halcyon mood. I wanted to create more of a vibe than any form of narrative. It’s simply a portrait of friends who are in love, some of them in liquid.
A huge thanks to all the cast and crew for their time and patience. I typically work with people I know and on this occasion I hadn’t worked with anyone on set before, most of them I hadn’t even met until the day – including the DP. Considering it was one take, Steadicam and shot on film I was naturally apprehensive but everyone absolutely smashed it and I am indebted to them.”
