Love the way the lyrics are embedded into the streets of New York in this video for Local Nomad. Directed by NYC-based animator Ynon Lan, who also did all the editing and VFX: “These shots were captured at a time when the streets were still filled with people and good energy (and hopefully they will be again soon).” Check it out above and click here for more of Lan’s previously featured work!

Heavy Chest – “Just You”

Lovely video for Heavy Chest by New Zealand-based director Josiah Watson (previously featured here). More of a visual poem than a traditional narrative, Watson describes “Just You” as an elegy to the time we lose trying to escape our thoughts, brought together through bite-sized vignettes of a girl searching for ‘something more’ in the mundane:

“The film jumps between two completely different worlds, one of which presents scenes which should feel all too familiar and the other being altogether more abstract and dreamlike. In the end we wonder whether it was a dream or a brief moment of pure, unadulterated escape”

Feels – “Lost”

Lots of fun elements in this video for Feels by Copenhagen-based director Bertil Vorre. As the band shares, they brought on Vorre for the project because they were looking to create something different and unexpected:

“We wanted to have two sides for this video, starting off with a light humorous hairdresser and barber shop and the more dark side of the matter. We didn’t want the video to be self explanatory but more having the audience guessing what the fuck is going on. And hopefully it will make more sense the second time you watch it.”

Old Man Canyon – “For the Taking”

An engrossing colour-coded narrative for Vancouver artist Old Man Canyon by director Geordie Starr (previously featured here). Shot on 16mm film by cinematographer Bryn McCashin, “For The Taking” incorporates interpretive dance movements, symbolism and cognitive imagery to convey a thematic battle between humanity in the red corner and technology in the blue. As Starr explains:

“Set in a world where human beings have become imprisoned by technology and categorized by colour, four unique colour codes use the power of a sacred dance to resist the powerful trance and fight to regain control of their oppressed minds. As they recite the motions, they are individually transported — through a miniature greenhouse portal — from their recluse warehouse into diverse exterior locations where they can finally be free to express themselves… We return to the warehouse to see them still entrapped by the bright, blinding light of their screens, which compels us to question whether they are truly free or if the escape was an odyssey spent entirely in the prison of their own minds.”

“Judith!” by Dorny Sunday

A dark and unabashed short by Manchester-based writer-director Dorny Sunday. “Judith!” follows an unhinged bride whose absurd act of violence transforms her big day into a bizarre form of creative self-expression:

“Those with a ‘creative streak’ live so much in their own heads that they don’t even really exist in time, in any classical sense. What I was attempting to explore was how creativity can be taken to the absolute extreme, in the most selfish way, at great costs. The narrative touches on social media but this wasn’t a critique of it –- it’s more a portrait of misplaced creative energy.”
