Blu Kobina – “Hooptie Loops”

Great video for Blu Kobina’s track “Hooptie Loops” by Edmonton-based director Don Zimmermon. The concept is based on Victor Burgin’s Office at Night photo series, which was itself an homage to Edward Hopper’s painting Office at Night (1940). Shot on Kodak 7222 by Don’s brother, cinematographer Bryce Zimmerman, the video came together with the help of Don’s cousin, Tom, who allowed them access to his engineering office and his other cousin, Mariah, who plays the love interest. As Don explains further:

“I wanted to work the stillness of photography into this work since Blu’s song has a melancholic, introspective feeling that I felt matched Burgin’s work. The office setting with its allusions to anonymous workers amid endless paper work well with the young rapper asserting himself while still questioning his ambitions…. To complete the visuals, our friend and animator Taylor Peters created animations based on the spirit of the original artworks, combined with the songs lyrics, to reimagine them as moving images.”

Asaf Avidan – “Earth Odyssey”

Dancers from different continents film their own improvised movements to Asaf Avidan’s track “Earth Odyssey” in this uplifting video by director Adi Halfin (previously featured here). Made while in confinement due to social distancing, the concept was inspired by the many instances of people continuing to play music from their balconies, dancing together through virtual meeting applications or, as Avidan describes it, “to simultaneously succumb to and transcend earthly limitations by artistic endeavours”:

“These are stressful times, and maybe it helps to remember that we are all a part of a mutual story. An experience of searching for meaning and control in this storm of a life. We all go through this one way or another. And in that… We are not alone. This is our Odyssey.”

HOSH & 1979 – “Midnight (The Hanging Tree)” feat. Jalja

Two lost souls meet by chance on a desolate road in this epic post-apocalyptic tale for HOSH and 1979’s track featuring Jalja. Directed by Icelandic filmmaker Erlendur Sveinsson, “Midnight (The Hanging Tree)” traverses a world where global warming has resulted in extreme storms that threaten people’s lives on a regular basis and make certain parts of the world uninhabitable. The project began shooting before the Corona virus outbreak while post-production took place during quarantine, as Sveinsson shares further:

“The video was shot in one long day right outside of Reykjavik, Iceland. The weather in Iceland can be quite unpredictable and we were surprised to find out on the shooting day that there was not a single cloud in the sky. That meant that we had to add clouds and storm elements to almost every single shot in post production. I worked with the extremely talented Jakob Thorhallsson on the VFX and he really went above and beyond creating this look. Me and Ási, the DOP, were aiming for an underexposed look and wanted to distort sharp lenses with film grain overlay. That’s why we shot this on the Masterprimes. Nicholas Liebing, our sound designer really gave it life and was able to design/mix the sound in a way where it really pulls you into the music video.”

Leifur James – “AAID”

An immersive video for Leifur James by Hungarian directors Balázs Simon and Dávid Dell’Edera. “AAID” meanders through the chain of memories of a man trying to make sense of a past relationship. As Simon explains, the visuals are meant to reflect the mixture of alienation and loss that emerge from James’ album as well as the ways our memories become fuzzy or blurred over time:

“Our brain is quite selective, there are things we remember very vividly, while other things remain unsure, or even untrue. That’s where the aesthetic of broken/incomplete 3D scans came in. It was a really exciting, but also weirdly upsetting process to work on this. The places found in the film are our own living spaces. Every day when we came together to work on the film we were in the real spaces, creating their broken, imaginary memory versions at the same time.”
