“Lockedout” by Andrea Pecora

A glimpse into how one homeless couple’s experience during the stay-at-home order in Milan by Italian director Andrea Pecora (previously featured here). The idea for the project came from Pecora’s desire to present a different perspective than the ones of balconies full of people or deserted streets shot from the mechanical eye of drones we’ve become so used to seeing. With “Lockedout” Pecora tells the story of those who have always been on the margins, but who unexpectedly find themselves as the only spectators of a changed world.

Glass Animals – “Dreamland”

Director Colin Read creates an Ikea-inspired music video in a box for Glass Animals in this ingenious video for “Dreamland.” Made during quarantine, Glass Animals’ Dave Bayley was sent everything he needed to shoot the video himself in his own apartment… some assembly required. As Read details further:

“To make the official video for Dreamland, we prepared… a set to construct; lighting equipment; props to assemble; camera gear…along with 50 pages of precise instructions, photo glossaries, and diagrams for how to put it all together. But beyond just making a pretty-looking visual, I wanted to tie in the creation process itself. So within the edit, we showed a personal, nostalgic “music video”—and then pulled away the veil, revealing the unique conditions by which it was created, all in the same piece. So it’s both a peek behind the curtain at an unexpected process, but also a depiction of how people are rising to the challenge of this global crisis. How artists are finding new ways to create art, and embracing these restrictions rather than be defeated by them.

Shout out to Dave, who was an absolute champ, and dragged dolly track up three flights of stairs (while we watched from the comfort of our own couches on video chat).”

“The Grass is Always Greener on TV” by Matt Pizzano & Nic Wehmeyer

A lovely balance of melancholy and hope in this documentary short by director-editor Matt Pizzano and producer-cinematographer Nic Wehmeyer. While Mark Bennett became known as they guy who spent his time creating painstakingly detailed floor plans of his favourite 1950s tv homes, the attention soon unearthed some of the darker aspects of living so deeply within fantasy. “The Grass is Always Greener on TV” explores how Bennett’s obsession with these idyllic imaginary worlds became a way of escaping an isolated life and how traumatic memories became the source of his art.

Broken Bells – “Good Luck”

Nice video for Broken Bells by directors Kimberly Stuckwisch and Nelson de Castro (previously featured here). “Good Luck” tells the story of a young boy with the miraculous ability to see beams of light permeating from people who feel invisible — just like him. As de Castro explains:

“To achieve the light ray effect, we hand traced and laser-cut over 4000 frames to create shape mattes, then physically shined light and haze through each individual frame to produce the stop motion effect. By mixing old school animation with practical haze over live-action footage, we were able to create the eerily atmospheric new dimension you see embedded in each frame.”

Carlos C Major – “Caminando Voy”

Two worlds collide in this delightfully ridiculous video for Spanish-Australian singer Carlos C Major. Directed by James Chappell (previously featured here), “Caminando Voy” (Walking, I Go) follows Carlos as he meanders through the usual serene vistas before suddenly finding himself in the middle of a very different music video. The concept behind the video is a metaphor for Carlos’ feelings of being chewed up and spat out by the world, contrasted against picturesque settings and old-school Hollywood endings.

Branded: “Where I Belong” by Wondercamp

An uplifting portrait of angler and environmental lobbyist, Chris Hill, for The Outbound Collective by Seattle-based production company Wondercamp. Directed and edited by Chris Crescian, “Where I Belong” shares Hill’s love of being outside as well as the stereotypes she often faces as a woman of colour. While Hill has long found solace in the outdoors, she didn’t see people like herself out there until recently. For Hill, Instagram accounts like @brownfolksfishing and other social media platforms allow underrepresented voices to create a new kind of conservation movement:

“People who are of marginalized communities have just banded together and said, ‘we’re gonna do it ourselves, we’re gonna create space in the outdoors for people who look like us.’”
