Orange Ocean – “DIG”

Lovely imagery in this poetic video for Orange Ocean by Melbourne-based director Yeoseop Yoon. Shot by Joey Knox (previously featured here), “DIG” explores the beauty that can emerge from experiences of pain and hardship. As Yoon explains:

“I wanted to paint a series of metaphoric images that mirrors the beauty of struggles we face. More importantly, it is not about the struggle but is about the emotional journey that often delivers something beautiful. I wanted each scene to be charged with a strong sense of ‘moving forward.’”

Lewis Del Mar – “The Ceiling”

Great energy and creativity to this video for Lewis Del Mar by New York-based director duo Jason Sondock and Simon Davis aka rubberband. (previously featured here). Made in a single take over the course of 14 hours with a micro crew, “The Ceiling” offers a practical metaphor for the album’s dichotomy of nature and industry using a mix of old and new technology:

“We did two takes consecutively (a couple loopy back to back all nighters), the camera tracking from one window in Jason’s apartment (at sunset) to the other (at sunrise), traveling 43 feet in total. We used a MoCo rig that was shipped from LA to NYC and was fully assembled by Jason upon arrival. The entire rig was built in his apartment by us, with no grips. The resulting film was then animated over using clear inkjet film and scanned in frame by frame. We like to think of creativity like gas: it expands to fit the container it’s in. Further we like to think this video would’ve been an incredible piece of art even if it was made completely agnostic of the pandemic.”

JONAH – “Ocean Wide”

Former world tour surfer Ricky Basnett shares his 8-year struggle with alcohol abuse in this hybrid music video for JONAH by South African director and cinematographer Jason Hearn. Known for his ability to capture intimate footage of people’s relationship with the sea, the band asked the now London-based filmmaker to adapt his short film, “No Regrets,” for their track. As Hearn reflects on the project:

“It has been great to repackage the story of my friend Ricky Basnett into a shorter format… The story has helped so many people and to see it now being reborn into a music video with an amazing song, we hope that more people will be inspired to turn around their lives for the better.”

Owen Pallett – “A Bloody Morning”

Another great project from Montréal-based director Vincent René-Lortie and dancer-choreographer Brittney Canda (previously featured here). Set to Owen Pallett’s track and filmed during the beginning of quarantine measures, “A Bloody Morning” sees Vincent and Brittney invite friends and family to dance from behind the windows of their homes. The piece contains footage from 14 consecutive evenings, rain or shine, as a way of showcasing the range of emotions experienced by those coping with the pandemic in their city:

“This project was meaningful for us and our community. We are grateful to be in a position where we could give our friends, family, and colleagues an opportunity to look forward to, when all other opportunities to perform had been canceled, and everything seemed so bleak for us artists. Hope it also makes you want to dance!”
