Pillow Queens – “Holy Show”

Lovely video for Pillow Queens by director Kate Dolan (previously featured here). In an effort to challenge the kind of hyper-sexualized depictions of queer desire so often presented through the male gaze, “Holy Show” captures the joyful intimacy between queer women through a female lens. As Dolan explains further:

“Myself and the girls are all queer so when they asked me to direct something for Holy Show we all felt it was time that we made a video that had some positive queer representation…. In parts of the video you see these women in isolated spaces without each other. For me this can be interpreted two ways. You could say that they are remembering this road trip as something from their past that they are feeling nostalgic about. But I also like to think that in those scenes those women haven’t met yet and the visions of the road trip are them projecting their desires. I remember as a teenager, before I was fully out, I would often reassure myself that one day I would be free to go where I wanted, to do what I wanted and that I would find someone who loved me as much as I loved them. Those thoughts really kept me going in dark times and I guess I wanted to capture that feeling.”

Fig – “Smog”

Great video for Sydney-based band Fig (previously featured here). Directed by singer Timothy Burnett, an executive producer and director at Entropico, “Smog” is described as ‘an exorcism of the repetitive’ as it reflects the track’s themes of monotony through a visual diary of the band recording the song. The video was shot by Burnett’s frequent collaborator, cinematographer Grégoire Lière, and inspired by Polish filmmaker Paweł Pawlikowski as well as Lière’s own photography.

“Mourn in the USA” by Chris Carboni

A simple yet powerful reminder from filmmaker Chris Carboni. “The story of unarmed black people killed by police in the US is really the story of systemic racism in this country. It’s the story of how the systems put in place to protect citizens can often yield the opposite result for many. It’s the story of Americans killed by America, and it’s a story that needs a new ending.”

“Who Am I?” by Adhel Arop

Director Adhel Arop investigates her mother’s experience as a child soldier in South Sudan in this documentary short. Commissioned by STORYHIVE — a platform which supports BC and Alberta-based creators — “Who Am I?” explores the effects of war, trauma, and ultimately the things that define us.

“When people look at our story the thing I wanted to avoid was that gaze of ‘poor you’, and look at it like how did you overcome such an obstacle. What made you, what drove you, to see past the sadness and see past the pain and the hurt and be able to gather strength to move forward everyday. As a second generation, this is my mother’s story, and I want you to not look at us with sympathy in your eyes and sadness, we are strong women and we overcame a lot, and we are going to continue to overcome, and we’re not going to let the world’s obstacles take us down. The only way to do that is to stand together, use each other’s voices. My mom has used me as a way to speak because she can’t.”
