Agnes – “Fingers Crossed”

Fun look to this video for Agnes by Stockholm-based collective Swim Club (previously featured here). Inspired by Hilma af Klint, Holy Mountain, and cosmic tarot cards, “Fingers Crossed” explores the eternal struggle between the Sun and the Moon:

“The Sun god rules over the bright and beautiful day. But in the alternative world the Moon god rules over the dark and mysterious night. They compete over the people’s beliefs, to lead and rule over the people. Through their magic, the gods shows the people’s true selves.”

“Paradiso” by Jan Vrhovnik

A lovely meditation on the riches of living modestly by director Jan Vrhovnik. Written by Ana Kerin and scored by Nico Casal, “Paradiso” introduces us to a small-town Calabrian named Giovanni whose sun-washed world of rolling Italian hills and sharing home-cooked meals with old friends offers a timely reminder of what really matters. “A dream coming true is better than just a dream,” Giovanni declares in this unexpected thought-piece about the ‘good life’:

“Cast in a corner shop, Giovanni was a chance meeting for the team who’d set out to Calabria to seek out the very essence of nostalgia. The team stumbled upon him and were taken by the sense of nostalgia that he embodied and the poetic way in which he uses language to convey a longing for simplicity. It was exactly what they had been looking for in a character for Paradiso. Completely improvised, his philosophical musings — weighing heavy with nostalgia and an unexpected wisdom — are what punctuate the themes of this memory-inducing three-minute short.”

Kruder & Dorfmeister – “Johnson”

Directors Oscar Pecher and Stefan Pecher mix themes of old and new in this surreal video for Kruder and Dorfmeister. Attempting to capture the sense of turbulence and confusion of our own world, “Johnson” takes us into a hypothetical future where digital has taken over at the same time nature has reclaimed its territory due to people’s neglect of their actual surroundings.

“See Me in the Water” by Luís Júlio da Silva

A young man spirals through the volatility of his subconscious in this haunting short by Berlin-based director Luís Júlio da Silva. Aiming to show how physical isolation affects the internal psyche, da Silva uses the water within the character’s domestic space and his imagined world to symbolize the manifestation of intangible anxieties. As da Silva states:

“Without the comfort of social interactions and relationships with others, the character struggles to negotiate his sense of self. He dives into the dark and empty corners of his mind and once there, he is forced to confront his anxieties alone.”

“Pandemic” by Pedro and James

A compelling quarantine project by director duo Pedro and James of London-based production company Autobahn. “Pandemic” is a compilation of some of the hard truths going through the minds of friends and loved ones around the world. While death, purpose, and responsibility are the kind of difficult things we usually try to avoid thinking about, in these unusual times that is precisely what we are forced to face. As Pedro and James state:

“During April we recorded these conversations, and while being on opposite sides of the world, we created this film using unused shots and personal footage. We confronted many of our own fears and although there isn’t a definitive answer, there were some thoughts that stayed with us. This film won’t reveal anything new, but it might bring some comfort and ideas, perhaps uniting us in what it means to be human during these uncertain times.”
