An important piece of history neatly explained by Austin, Texas-based director Mark Lopez of Silkworm Studio. Narrated by Richard Rothstein, American historian and author of The Color of Law, “Segregated By Design” clearly outlines how federal, state and local governments segregated major metropolitan areas throughout the United States.
“Prejudice can be birthed from a lack of understanding the historically accurate details of the past. Without being aware of the unconstitutional residential policies the United States government enacted during the middle of the twentieth century, is it any wonder that students grow up inclined to think that programs to ameliorate ghetto conditions are simply undeserved handouts? The true record that is not being taught at any of our schools is brought to light in ‘Segregated by Design’. This is the major challenge at hand: to educate fellow citizens of the unconstitutional inequality that we’ve woven and not allow the next generation to be ignorant of these injustices”
