Noble Son – “Joy in Violence”

Directed by Kasey Lum and shot by Cole Graham, Noble Son’s latest video “Joy in Violence” is described as “a wild homage to the people we love and the ways they destroy us.” Vancouver’s Adam Kirschner aka Noble Son channels a young Jim Carrey in what is quite a memorable performance and one that captures the unique energy of his album as a whole.

Premiere: Alaskan Tapes – “Waiting”

The first in a 3-part series of beautifully subtle narrative films written and directed by Toronto-based filmmaker Andrew De Zen. Created for Alaskan Tapes’ upcoming album, You Were Always An Island, the characters in each instalment all struggle with a sense of separation from the things they love. Although, the series is just as much about the lengths we’re willing to go to for our loved ones.

Operating under the mantra “Something never stated, only implied,” De Zen wrote short epigraphic poems to both help each video to stand on its own and connect it to the larger whole. De Zen also formed elaborate backstories, all while knowing that viewers would only ever catch a glimpse of what was happening beneath the surface. Speaking further about the project and its special connection to Vancouver, De Zen shared with us:

“One thing I wanted to touch on was the fact that each film is shot on 35mm by our awesome Vancouver based DP, Cole Graham. The music of Alaskan Tapes is so incredibly evocative and ambient that we immediately knew this was something that only film could capture. As film is consistent through each piece, the style and aesthetic shifts – Waiting is in black and white 2-perf, while Skin is in colour 2-perf, and we are shooting Places in 16×9 colour. It’s also worth noting that the entire series is shot in Vancouver and at this point I believe, including Alaskan Tapes’ earlier films, all the music videos have been shot in Vancouver so I find it interesting that the music now has this associated image with this location and landscape.”

Premiere: “Ether: a kind of breeze” by Les Diables

A poetic short by directing duo André Martins and Tiago Lemos aka Les Diables from Porto, Portugal. Inspired by the desire to present surfing in a different light, “Ether” draws on the concept of the butterfly effect and how small variations work to alter larger systems. In this case, both surfer and dancer are moved by the swell of the sea and, in turn, alter the strength and speed of the waves. The production similarly grew from the push and pull of ideas and support from others, as Tiago shared with us:

“‘Ether’ is what we call a real challenge. Of all the previous projects we worked together, me and André, this was the one that really got us taking a step out of our comfort zone. To have a textured aesthetic which removes us from Nature, we chose to use old analogue lenses, adding a natural and grainy look to the film. Regarding the production we relied on the help of a team mostly consisting of friends that work in the area.”

Müller & Roedelius – “Fractured Being” feat. Kenichi

Some great shots in this video for Christoph H. Müller and Hans-Joachim Roedelius by French directing duo Nassim Maoui and Christophe Mentz aka Videodrome (previously featured here). Marking the continuation of Roedelius and Müller’s musical collaboration, the track also features vocals by Katrin Hahner. In terms of the visuals, Videodrome builds on the dreamlike nature of the song, as they shared with us:

“We shot the video in Morocco in the city of Marrakech and the surrounding desert. We follow a young woman and she dives into a surreal world. During her journey she comes across a mysterious figure as we follow her trip in search of herself.”

Jiants – “Plan”

The latest music video for indie three-piece, Jiants, by Toronto-based director Aidan Johnston. Inspired by the idea of creating a ‘lonestar’ type character and building on the track’s themes of being stuck by one’s own inability to take action, Johnston explains:

“We wanted to explore what that loneliness and self-isolation could look like in a modern city, and there wasn’t anywhere we could picture being more empty and beautiful than the Toronto islands in the middle of winter. So that’s how it came to spending 3 1/2 minutes with a character who lives there year round.”
