Premiere: “Name Me One Person” by Fraser Thomas White

A beautiful portrait of tattoo artist Ash Timlin by Toronto-based writer and director Fraser Thomas White (previously featured here). Born out of a series of late-night conversations with cinematographer John Ker and Ash herself, “Name Me One Person” offers both a humble glimpse into an artist at work and a broader rumination on our human connection to the natural world. The experimental short was shot entirely on Kodak 16mm film as a way of further reflecting Ash’s aesthetic sensibilities, as Fraser explains:

“From the beginning, we felt that it was very important that we capture Ash through the lens of her own work. And since her work is primarily rendered in black ink and defined by high contrast and natural lines, shooting with black and white film seemed like the natural choice. After conducting a few tests, we knew that Tri-X was the right look for the project.”

“Ocean Breeze” by Joe Gomez

A French Canadian tourist struggles to embrace what might be outside of her hotel room in this fantastic short by Nashville-based director Joe Gomez. Especially love the pacing and subtlety of the storytelling. While filled with lots of lovely details, “Ocean Breeze” is ultimately about all the things left unspoken. As Gomez himself notes:

“There’s a story written for what’d bring our main character to such a place of isolation, but my favorite part of making this short was the variety of feelings and stories that everyone involved recognized in it. For some it’s a story of anxiety, heartbreak for others, for me it all started with a lot of boring hours spent in the similar looking disappointing hotel rooms over the last few years.”

Premiere: Honyock – “Patron”

A depressed clown tries to start a band in this fun video for Honyock’s track “Patron” by director Graham Lovelis of California-based Grimace Collective. Driven by the belief that the Sacramento band deserves to be heard, Lovelis did everything he could (including taking up amateur clowning) to make a video that would be equally worthy of being seen. Describing the project as “a study on how to make music videos on the cheap,” the entire production came together with just a 3-person crew. As for the idea behind the clown, Lovelis delightfully explains:

“The concept for this video was born out of an absurd discussion between me and Spencer from Honyock about casual clowns, ego, addiction, codependency, rebirthing (you have to give birth to yourself in order to psychologically deal with your mother’s physical pain). You know, casual lunch discussions. The rest of the ideas came from just putting some pen to paper and letting it flow. Most of my favorite concepts involve not overthinking. Is it interesting, original, fun? Do it.”
