A poetic short by directing duo André Martins and Tiago Lemos aka Les Diables from Porto, Portugal. Inspired by the desire to present surfing in a different light, “Ether” draws on the concept of the butterfly effect and how small variations work to alter larger systems. In this case, both surfer and dancer are moved by the swell of the sea and, in turn, alter the strength and speed of the waves. The production similarly grew from the push and pull of ideas and support from others, as Tiago shared with us:
“‘Ether’ is what we call a real challenge. Of all the previous projects we worked together, me and André, this was the one that really got us taking a step out of our comfort zone. To have a textured aesthetic which removes us from Nature, we chose to use old analogue lenses, adding a natural and grainy look to the film. Regarding the production we relied on the help of a team mostly consisting of friends that work in the area.”
