“Cake” by Alan Friel

Some terrific writing made even better by some stellar performances by Maxine Peake (Black Mirror) and Letitia Wright (Black Panther) in this short directed by Alan Friel. “Cake” throws us into a barren wasteland with two women trying to figure out their options. We thoroughly enjoyed this one.

Documentary: “Going Forward”

A fantastic portrait of third-generation activist, Malcolm Kenyatta, directed by Tim Harris of Philadelphia-based Seven Knots Productions. Hoping to become the first openly gay candidate of colour elected to state office, Kenyatta works tirelessly to spread a message of positivity and possibility through poverty-stricken North Philadelphia:

“Democracy has many faces, but few know what it takes to run a grassroots campaign. Our goal as filmmakers was to capture the day as purely as possible in order to show viewers what election day is like for a lower-level candidate campaigning in a district that’s desperate for a solution. We followed Malcolm from start (5am) to finish (11pm), capturing the day as it happened, and interviewing Malcolm during the quieter, more introspective moments.”

Watch “Going Forward” above and see full credits below!
