“Stop and Search” by Harry Jackson

Two UK police officers find themselves unfairly stopped and searched in this satiric short from London-based filmmaker Harry Jackson. As Jackson cautions, the events taking place in the States right now are an important reminder that racism isn’t just something that exists elsewhere:

“In the UK, there were 30, 608 stop and searches in April 2020 — despite us being in lock down. This is a massive increase on previous years. As we know this disproportionately affects black people who are 9.7 times more likely to be stopped and search. True to the statistics, sadly both actors Alessandro and Selom have been subjected to this humiliating experience. BAME people have also been 54% more likely to be fined under corona virus restrictions. It’s overdue, but the George Floyd tragedy has forced us to reexamine the problems we have at home.”

“Meet Me At The Stairs” by Jesse Hunt

An intimate portrait of a young woman living in isolation from her immunocompromised husband. Directed, shot and edited by Jesse Hunt, “Meet Me At The Stairs” explores the anxiety that comes with being an essential emergency worker during a worldwide pandemic and coping with the sacrifices necessary to keep your family members safe. As Hunt states:

“Ten years ago at the age of 21, I underwent a procedure that saved my life. A kidney transplant. My father donated one of his kidneys to someone that neither of us knew for me to receive a healthy organ, from another party in return. Before that, I spent the majority of my life gradually progressing towards undetected renal failure which is ultimately what led me to a brief stint of dialysis and then the transplant….

Because of these somewhat defining experiences that come with a procedure such as an organ transplant, I have an appreciation for what living with a compromised immune system means. I also have an appreciation for how this daily challenge affects those closest to me, especially at a time like this.”

Role Model – “For The People In The Back”

A nice reminder to have confidence in yourself for Role Model’s track “For The People In The Back” by Los Angeles-based director Dylan Knight (previously featured here):

“The video was originally written as a meta approach to a music video — Tucker (the artist) shoots his own album cover while energetically exploring his own set. To me, it took on a new context being released during the Covid pandemic. It feels even more like a special reminder that you’re enough and deserve to feel confident — even if it means making the (often scary) decision go it on your own.”

Drama – “Forever And A Day”

Great mix of visuals in this video for Drama by directors Scott Perry and Tucker Bliss aka justfriends. Inspired by their own recent breakups, “Forever And A Day” explores the feeling of paralysis and helplessness after the end of a longterm relationship. As Perry describes:

“You feel you gave every bit of your soul to saving something, but it just wasn’t possible. So of course, you spend the next few months of your life going over how you could have saved it. In this aftermath, life feels almost paused, we’re lost in thought, distracted, daydreaming, staring off into oblivion, plagued by inner monologue. Sometimes it’s sad, sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s just the way it is. So we wanted to make a film that focuses on this pause, where basic existence feels impossible, but you have to stomach it and ride it out.”
