“Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?” by Derek Brown

A charming documentary short about the life and career of Jeffrey Gurian by New York City-based filmmaker Derek Brown. Despite being a fixture in the comedy world for the last 40 years, writing for some of the biggest stars in comedy since the 1980s, Jeffrey never became a household name. This is due in part to the fact that his foray into comedy coincided with running his own cosmetic dentistry practice. “Who The F*ck Is Jeffrey Gurian?” explores the unique contradiction of his two professional passions and his continued pursuit of becoming a famous comedian:

“I met Jeffrey Gurian when I first moved to New York. After working in restaurants to make ends meet for a few months, I was itching to do anything involving film. I scoured Craigslist applying to everything I saw that looked somewhat related to video production. A few days later I received an email titled, “RE: Nationally Known Comedy Writer Seeks Intern.” Next thing I knew, I was in Jeffrey’s Upper East Side apartment being interviewed to edit videos for his Youtube channel, Comedy Matters TV. The walls in his apartment were filled from ceiling to floor with pictures of Jeffrey with every celebrity on the planet. While I only ended up working for Jeffrey out of his apartment for a few months, the experience left an impression on me.

About five years later, I was struggling to get a narrative film off the ground. Raising funds is not my specialty. I thought, “Am I going to be stuck making content for brands that I don’t believe in and just pursuing my original work instead of actually being able to make it?” Jeffrey popped into my head. I identified with his life long pursuit of comedy fame and wanted to tell that story. I called him the next day and we met at a diner to discuss the possibility of me making a film chronicling his life and work in comedy.”

Glass Animals – “Heat Waves”

A heartfelt meditation on the current state and future of music for Glass Animals’ track “Heat Waves.” Directed remotely by Colin Read (previously featured here), the project was shot with social distancing and involved enlisting an entire block’s worth of quarantined London residents to become part of the camera team! As the bands own Dave Bayley states:

“This video is a love letter to live music and the culture and togetherness surrounding it. It was filmed at the peak of the lockdown in my neighbourhood in East London by the lovely people who live around me, just using their phones. These are people who are usually out at shows, in galleries, going to cinemas etc. These venues are left empty now, and many of them will not survive. The song is about loss and longing, and ultimately realizing you are unable to save something…and this video is about that but for art, being together, and human contact. …When everyone was leaning out of their windows filming, I felt that same sense of togetherness and spine-tingling energy that happened at live shows. It made the coldness of performing to an empty room with the band stuck on screens feel even more heart-breaking.”

UK-based director and photographer Nic Kane (previously featured here) captures Elder Island’s 2019 Omnitone Tour in this lovely ode to the two-way street that is the relationship between audience and musician. Combining cine film and VHS punctuate digital footage, the short documentary offers insight into the band’s hands-on approach to touring — a snapshot that hits a particular sense of poignancy and nostalgia given the current hold on live shows.

Solo Ansamblis – “Dansingas” (Mature)

Another ambitious video from Solo Ansamblis (previously featured here), this time by Lithuanian director Titas Sūdžius and produced by Scuare. “Dansingas” took over a year to make and involved contributions from more than 200 people and partners. While the apocalyptic visuals leave a lot open for interpretation, many topical themes emerge as the video branches into narratives of resistance, isolation, and false prophets. As Sūdžius states:

“The lyrics of this song and the way it is written work by awakening the human subconscious. In the creative process, it was an essential hint to me, prompting the answer how the image should work. I wrote the script back in the fall of 2018. The story came about almost automatically, listening to the song and trying to visualize a suspicion of the future.”

“Now You Know” by Rogelio

CANADA director Rogelio González uses his time off during quarantine to embark on an introspective trip into his own psyche. A unique celebration of the opportunities lockdown can bring, “Now You Know” captures the relationship between Rogelio and his roommate, Javier Dichas, to suggest that the limitations a 50 day lockdown imposes only exist in the mind. Or, in Rogelio words, what could’ve happened “in any Spanish home when you lockdown a couple of immature adults.”

“Rear View Mirror” by Jonathan May

Director and cinematographer Jonathan May offers a beautifully poignant look at the desert opal mining town of Andamooka, one of the most remote places in South Australia. In its glory days Andamooka had over 3000 residents; now the population sits at 316. The story of the place is told through the eyes of Ingo Hansen, a man who grew up in the area and has returned, struggling with his health. While reminiscing on the impact of the harsh landscapes and the once thriving outback town, Hansen draws parallels to the journey of his own life:

“It takes a certain type of person to love a place like this, with the isolation and the desolation. Walking through the cemetery Ingo reflects on the grim truths of his reality, and how strange it is to know every body that lies beneath him in the dust. As in life, both the once beautiful landscape and the once promising future he faced are slowly fading away and the story is unforgiving.”
