The Neighbourhood – “Stargazing”

Nice companion video for The Neighbourhood’s track “Pretty Boy” (previously featured here). In “Stargazing” director Ramez Silyan builds on the particular reality of frontman Jesse Rutherford’s character, Chip Chrome, who turned himself into a shiny object hoping to catch strangers eyes on the streets of Hollywood. A deeply personal video for Nana by Los Angeles-based director Andrew Litten (previously featured here). Branded: “Out of Office” by Gemma Warren

Toronto-based creative studio Public Office and director Gemma Warren come together to present this delightful little film about the humble office chair. Appearing out of context and seemingly misplaced, “Out of Office” plays with the very idea of such specifically designated furnishings in terms of the past but also the future. Especially at a time when so many of us are working from home, does it still serve its purpose or does it even have to as we start to reimagine the meaning of work? As the team states:

“In the creative industry, we are blessed to intertwine play with the necessity of making money to survive but in other forms of work, how do we interpret Alan Watts’ challenge to make work into play? How does this philosophy translate into industries like medicine when work means facing challenges of human lives? Do we reflect on the nurses who find moments of lightness even when faced with a pandemic?

We ask these questions knowing that the world will be different going forward and believe it’s time to re-evaluate the warp-speed of productivity brought on by the new digital era of the last three decades. Maybe it’s time to slow down, take a pause and give ourselves reprieve from these phantom expectations, to live simpler lives, to live with less and to focus on work revolving around life vs the other way around.”

Kaytranada – “Look Easy” (The Short) feat. Lucky Daye

Director Xavier Tera creates a classic portrait of Japan with some modern twists for Kaytranada’s track with Lucky Daye. Inspired by Tera’s years living in Japan, “Look Easy” presents a seemingly traditional yakuza storyline, featuring the queen of Tokyo’s club scene (Luli), while incorporating subtle elements that hint toward the gradual changes in diversity and openness the city is currently undergoing. As Tera states:

“After living in Japan for the past 4 years, I’ve seen it change. Opening up slowly but clearly to the outside, the country is definitely investing time and money in preserving their culture, habits and customs. Some might seem advanced, others might feel from another era, for the best or the worst. This being said, I wanted to portray Japan using one of its utmost cliché, but change it slightly and change the narrative to update it to 2020.”
