Branded: “Yan Yan Knit and Bobo the cat”

Love the look of this little commissioned piece for Hong Kong-based knit brand Yan Yan Knit, directed, edited, and shot by Ryosuke Tanzawa (previously featured here). In light of the current state of isolation and loneliness caused by COVID-19, YanYan have been relying on the support of friends and collaborators to figure out ways to continue to connect and inspire one another from afar. Enlisting Ryosuke — a Japanese filmmaker based in New York — his partner Deb and their cat Bobo, the short spot offers a snapshot of the simple things we can still enjoy, even in surreal times.

Salvatore Vitale – “Mejor Mentir”

Nice mix of ideas behind this video for Salvatore Vitale by Mexico City-based director Andres Arochi (previously featured here). Starring Mexican LGBT+ icon Loreto Pozos and gay porn director G Del Diablo, “Mejor Mentir” tells the story of emotionally crippled men trapped inside a world of petty fantasies. The style of the video is inspired by Cine de Ficheras — the Mexican sex comedy genre that flourished in the 1970s/80s — as well as the very real violence currently experienced by the trans community in Mexico. As Arochi explains:

“[Cine de Ficheras] were usually shot on a low budget, in low quality and although they have a sexual undertone and double entendres, they weren’t particularly explicit. Keeping close with its inspiration — the cinematography, production design and aesthetics of the film recreate a sexy and shabby Mexico City in the late 1970s. However, the central concept in Mejor Mentir is a femme fatal revenge story of a trans woman singer who rebels against macho oppression.

There is a huge trans culture in Mexico and a booming trans woman prostitution industry with their customers being mostly heterosexual men. It is a world that still takes place in the shadows of society and has led to major violence against trans women in our country. The average lifespan of trans women in Mexico is 35 years old.”

Ocean Pleasant – “Always Been You”

Singer-songwriter Ocean Pleasant and Los Angeles-based filmmaker Anastasia Antonova explore the emotional back and forth of a “will they/won’t they” style relationship in this lovely DIY video for “Always Been You.” Shot just after the state of California went into lockdown, the pair made do with a backyard set up of six whiskey ice cube trays, 14 flower bouquets, and a garden hose:

“The song touches upon the kind of hot-cold love that thaws out our tenderness and then freezes it back up in protection, inspiring the main visuals of frozen florals. This kind of love feels uncontained and watery. Flowers thawing in first half of the song and freezing back up in the second half is not only, of course, representative of the theme of uncertain love, but also of the time it was made in: a time in which our longings to connect feel strongest during the turbulence of a pandemic, yet our protective forces, structurally imposed and humanly innate, keep us from reaching for that connection.”

“In Spirit” by Jonathan Salmon & Nathan Williams

A young man confronts the trauma of his past as he attends the funeral of a childhood friend in this moving short directed by Jonathan Salmon and played by Nathan Williams. Set on the Tulalip Reservation and featuring a cast of all members of the Tulalip Tribes, “In Spirit” offers a modern day look at the effects of generational trauma.

“In Spirit is the mirror that reflects the emotional trauma and turmoil that young Indigenous
folks endure on reservations across the United States. In the 8 minutes, we watch a young
man grapple with accepting the death of his childhood friend. As he struggles to come to
terms with the passing, it’s the normalization of constant death in his community that has
taken its toll on his ability to cope without noticing.”
