Premiere: “LEVEL” by DAD®

An intense experiment in sound and image from Los Angeles-based directing duo Grant Spanier and Corey C. Waters (aka DAD®). Existing somewhere between a loose conceptual narrative and moody fashion film, “LEVEL” follows two characters played by Aaliyah Ei and James Holmes. Similarly caught in the liminal space between mutual attachment and their individual futures, the stylish back-and-forth proves just how difficult relationships can be.

Directed by DAD® (Grant Spanier & Corey C. Waters)
Shot, Edited & Scored by DAD®
Starring Aaliyah Ei & James Holmes

Premiere: “Fleurs: Between Us Two” by Matt Grimard

An experimental short by Montréal-based filmmaker Matt Grimard. “Fleurs: Between Us Two” opens a window into a relationship gone wrong as a young man calls for a tragic separation through the offer of an unexpected gift.

Narrated in the present yet visualized through the past, the film’s unique photo-novelesque style was created using a looping technique Grimard first delved into 2 years ago. The process required editing without the use of a computer as all the loops involve micro sequences of 6 to 8 paper printed frames, as he explained to us: “The idea was to stick both characters in micro-moments to enlighten memories we live on.”

Check out the captivating results above as well as some behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot below!

Young Fathers – “In My View”

Love this video for Young Fathers’ track “In My View” by London-based director Jack Whiteley. Starting with the question of how you make people care about a video, Whiteley collaborated with the band to come up with a series of vignettes that would check all the boxes required to elicit an emotional response from viewers. From there they took things a step further, adding a “meta curveball layer” that basically offers a step-by-step guide on how to make a music video. As he shared with us:

“I love videos that challenge perceptions, pull the rug from under the viewer, offer twists and subvert things, and so that’s what we’ve reached for here.”

This video was submitted by Jack Whiteley and selected by our team. Consider participating here if you have a project you’d like us to check out!
