Premiere: Aloe – “Cuándo Será”

Great art direction and flawless cinematography in this video for Aloe by director Hernán Kacew of  Buenos Aires-based Pantera & Company (previously featured here). Starring actress and performance artist, Margarita Molfino, “Cuándo Será” follows a woman moving in the periphery of an unfamiliar setting filled with equally unfamiliar inhabitants. As Kacew explains:

“We wanted to create an environment slightly displaced from reality, where objects as well as characters seem alien yet familiar at the same time. In this setting our main character suffers various transformations, both in a very bodily manner but also through her most modest gestures. Ultimately, there is a primitive key factor in how her surroundings learn and adapt to her movements and expressions.”

Documentary: “Tam Tam – Outside the Lines”

A deeply moving and beautifully shot portrait by director Greg Hackett of UK-based Spindle. “Outside the Lines” tells the story of a young Italian basketball team whose simple desire to compete raises issues of home and belonging for those denied automatic citizenship in the country in which they were born. Italy does not currently grant the right to citizenship at birth, ‘ius soli’, leaving over a million children of immigrant parents with painfully ambiguous citizenship status.

“trashbag dickheads” by Parker Davis

Writer-director Parker Davis captures the plight of the modern independent filmmaker in this cathartic short about dealing with rejection. As he wrote to us:

“We are constantly submitting our films to contests, films festivals, and film sites (not unlike this one). The film explores the self-loathing, dependency, and anger we feel as we impatiently wait for a ‘yes’ that rarely comes. We often tell ourselves ‘that was the last time’ only to giddily submit our next film.”
