Mark Kozelek & Sean Yeaton – “The Reasons I Love You”

Adelaide, Australia-based motion designer Luke Gibbs animates Mark Kozelek and Sean Yeaton’s count down of “The Reasons I Love You.” Really like the abstract style of the animation and the highly specific reasons like taking good care of hardwood floors.

Adam Ostrar – “Warlock”

A minimalist animation for Adam Ostrar’s track “Warlock” by animator Dave Merson Hess from Houston, Texas. While initially planning to tell a metaphysical ghost story set at night, Hess witnessed the devastation of Hurricane Harvey first hand and emerged only wanting to draw images of rain and flooding. With the help of his producing partner Janine Waranowicz, Hess reworked the video to convey a murkier narrative reflective of his personal experience.

“I wanted it to be meditative rather than horrific — in retrospect, maybe as a way to process the trauma of what had happened.”

A beautifully shot and subtly told short by Dublin-based filmmaker Johnny Cullen. “Burden” follows a Celtic warrior as she struggles to carry her wounded father to safety. The self-funded passion project was shot on location in Wicklow, Ireland in early February. The small crew faced their own set of challenges hauling gear up the mountains in the snow but, as Cullen shared with us, “in the end, we all thought it was worth it!”

Bergfilm – “Nostalgic Love” (Mature)

Another great video for Bergfilm by director Joscha Bongard (previously featured here). “Nostalgic Love” explores the disconnect between expressions of love and sexuality for different generations. While sexual freedom is on the rise, Bongard questions why love at an older age only seems to be accepted when depicted as caring and devoted. As he shared with us:

“With Nostalgic Love I wanted to bring teenage needs and feelings back to an older age and show an unconventional love story without restraint. A story about lovers who missed each other at a certain point in life and try to regain what has passed by.”

In addition to allowing his stars wildness and passion, the film also offers a subtle critique of what the younger generations do (or fail to do) with their relative abundance of time and freedom.
