Documentary: “Mexico City Punks” by John Merizalde

A portrait of punk culture in Mexico City by Los Angeles-based filmmaker John Merizalde (previously featured here). While the emergence of the British subculture within Latin American countries may seem unusual, to Merizalde the thriving scene makes a lot of sense given the socio-economic struggles faced by many of the people there:

“It’s not just about the music or fashion. I think part of the reason you see punk more prominently here is because Mexicans, in general, are more socially conscious of corruption and work together in more collectivist ways to combat it. To the punks in Mexico, the scene is way more than just aesthetics. It’s a support system for the working class.”

Premiere: “Lost in Sound” by Adam Neustadter & James Iha

A bittersweet short by filmmaker Adam Neustadter and musician James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins). “Lost in Sound” stars Nora Zehetner (Brick) as a woman who hears a movie soundtrack in her head. The swelling score sends her into a world all her own, preventing her from connecting with people in real life. Neustadter and Iha have collaborated on music videos in the past. However it was Iha’s latest foray into composing for film and television that became the driving force behind the film. As Neustadter shared with us:

“We started talking about making a music-driven short that I could direct and he could score. We developed this project together, and I wrote the script knowing that his music would not just be featured, but would be an essential part of the narrative.”

Watch (and listen) above. Full credits and some behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot below!

Branded: Olive Garden Parody

The Merkin Bros’ subtle parody ad captures America’s fraught relationship with Olive Garden. With backgrounds in the film industry and advertising, perhaps it’s no surprise that the Los Angeles-based collective’s series of faux commercials have managed to fool the companies own employees!
