First Aid Kit – “It’s a Shame”

A brilliant split screen video for sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg aka First Aid Kit by Swedish director Mats Udd. “It’s a Shame” marks Mats third time working with the folk duo who were eager to try something a little different this time around. As he shared with us:

“First Aid said ‘We like the idea of us not being together in the video. In all of our videos we’re always together, holding hands. So we were like, ‘How can we both be in the video but not together?’”

See what they came up with above! And click here to check out our previous posts of Mats work, if you haven’t already!

Original Swimming Party – “Biggest Curse” feat. Moonchild

Love this video for Original Swimming Party’s track with Moonchild by director Amy Allais (of Johannesburg-based Ola! Films). “Biggest Curse” beautifully explores the dynamics of domestic life in South Africa based on childhood memories of growing up there. As Allais shared with us:

“My friend Lebogang Mogashoa tells stories about growing up as the son of a domestic worker in Johannesburg living in the home of his white employers. This is a very common situation in South Africa – the domestic space divided into squares of have and have nots. In one of his stories, he recounts how he took a bite out of a cake that his mom baked on behalf of the “Madam” for a church function. And how small acts of rebellion can feel like the first gusts of a mighty wind.”

Kid Simius – “SE / MI” feat. Kelvyn Colt

Director Daniel Eceolaza’s video for Kid Simius’ track with Kelvyn Colt pays homage to Manuel Moreno, a Spanish bailaor who brought flamenco to Berlin in the 1970s. Inspired by Federico García Lorca’s poem “El paso de la Siguiriya” and featuring German choreographer Ana Menjibar, “SE / MI” offers a vibrant look at an unusual subculture.

Premiere: “Varken” by Rory Bentley

A delightfully unexpected short about self discovery written, directed and edited by London/Paris-based filmmaker Rory Bentley. Shot in his own house on a crowd-funded budget of just over £1000, “Varken” follows a young woman struggling with unemployment as well as a creeping suspicion that deep down she is actually a pig.

In order to create the subtly surreal atmosphere, Bentley enlisted cinematographer Adam Singodia, a stylishly unsettling score from Giuseppe Alfano and disconcerting sound design honed by Morgan Williams. As Bentley charmingly described the project to us:

“I think our society likes to think of itself as being quite late on in history when really we don’t know anything about our emotional inheritance and we shy away from the fact that we are still very much ruled by our animalistic drives. But, despite those grand pretentious notions, it was also just a really fun wacky piece to make!”
