“Atlanta From the Ashes” by Andrew Litten

A short documentary by Los Angeles-based filmmaker Andrew Litten. Featuring his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, “Atlanta From the Ashes” is a celebration of the city’s resiliency that touches on struggles from the civil rights movement to the current issues of gentrification, and includes preserved imagery of the SCLC, Julian Bond, MLK, John Wesley Dobbs and more. As Litten shared with us:

“I was able to interview a lot of incredible people in the city, but the most rewarding was to work directly with Emory University to pull from their archives to tell this story.”

Branded: Patrón x Guillermo Del Toro

An epic spot for Guillermo Del Toro’s collaboration with Patrón by Seattle-based directing duo Danielle Krieger and Casey Warren aka Mindcastle (previously featured here). As Casey shared with us, the piece was shot at the main bottling plant in Mexico. They even made the book seen in the film using concept sketches by Guy Davis, a production designer who’s worked on many of Del Toro’s projects:

“We wanted the film to fit within the world that most of GDTs films are set in so we found inspiration in Mexican folklore, dark fantasy and Jalisco poetry.”

“Urban Youth” by Matthew Sterling

A raw exploration of modern youth culture by UK-based filmmaker Matthew Sterling (previously featured here). Set to the track “So” by Alice Jemima, “Urban Youth” was created for Straight 8, which dictated that the entire film be shot on one super 8mm cartridge with only in-camera edits and no post-production, meaning that Sterling’s short was processed and entered into the competition without his having seen a single frame!

This video is just one of the many creative submissions we’ve received in the past week. Consider participating here if you have a project you’d like us to check out.
