Love this short piece by director David Findlay (previously featured here). Beautifully shot by cinematographer Farhad Ghaderi, “Air” is a timely ode to the power of human connection. As Findlay states:

“The inspiration for this one came from observations made in a time where physical contact is impossible but where human connection prevails.”

“Pure Immersion” by Dave Biddle & Dave Ehrenreich

An experimental western written and directed by Dave Biddle and Dave Ehrenreich (previously featured here). Harnessing classic road movie imagery and contemporary vibrations of climate change, “Pure Immersion” is a genre-bending audio-visual journey about an actor (Willa Holland) recuperating from cosmetic surgery. While stopped in a small town expecting to find peace and quiet, it becomes clear that Ashcroft is not a place of passive rest.

“It All Comes Back To Adobe” by Parker Foster & Levi Arnold

A beautifully heartfelt documentary short by director duo Parker Foster and Levi Arnold. “It All Comes Back To Adobe” follows Marfa county resident, Sandro Canovas, on a personal mission to defend the traditional form of building using dirt and water. In Marfa, Texas, adobe housing has become popular amongst wealthy vacationers and retirees which has, in turn, spurred a rise in property taxes and appraisals that disproportionately affect Marfa’s residents.

“The Other Side” by Josh Leong

A moving short about the Ethiopian communities impacted by the abandoned children crisis, written and directed by New York City-based filmmaker Josh Leong. “The Other Side” was inspired by a church missions trip in 2018 where Leong stayed at a boys orphanage. There he befriended 17-year-old Abel, whose story of having to leave his younger brother behind when he turned 18 impacted Leong deeply — remaining with him well after he returned to the US and started his freshman year at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

“Due to poverty, HIV, chronic illness, and lack of female empowerment programs, there are 5 million vulnerable children in Ethiopia ranging from infancy to 18 years of age. Hundreds of private orphanages have closed due to lack of funding, resulting in millions of vulnerable children often living their entire lives on the streets.”

Flower Bomb – “Come Together”

An uplifting debut from community-based art project Flower Bomb. Founded in Vancouver’s downtown east side, “Come Together” was created by local artists Benton Robertson, Sam Leoganda, and YMC Dushine. The young boys in the video were cast through an after school program Benton helps run in the Strathcona neighbourhood.

“The sentiment of coming together is not only a concept written about in the song but was truly lived out through the creation of both the song and the video. The intention of this film was to demonstrate reciprocity, sharing and the value of community over material goods through a simple narrative.”
