Pearson Sound – “Earwig”

Something strangely addictive about this video for Pearson Sound by London-based artist and filmmaker Leila Ziu. Combining performance art and lo-fi visual effects, “Earwig” features a string of bizarrely costumed-characters (all played by Ziu and Maëva Berthelot) making their way along a virtual catwalk.

Elio Toffana & Lou Fresco – “Invisible”

Spanish director Miguel Angulo captures the raw intensity of sibling dynamics for Elio Toffana & Lou Fresco. More short film than music video, “Invisible” follows the relationship between two sisters and how the things that are not always visible (intuition, love, familial bonds) often have a bigger impact on our lives than that which is easily seen or understood. Premiere: Tom Rosenthal – “To You Alone”

An intimate exploration of solitude from Mexican-Iranian director and cinematographer Farhad Ghaderi, French director and choreographer Sara Silkin and American choreographer and performer Derek Tabada for British singer-songwriter Tom Rosenthal’s track “To You Alone.” The international collaboration came together one warm afternoon in Los Angeles, as Ghaderi recalls:

“None of us knew each other or had worked together before but we instantly connected through Tom’s beautiful music and admiration for each other’s work. Not knowing where it would take us, we decided to take a leap of faith, and guide our contributions by the idea of being so vulnerable and exposed, yet feeling terribly lonely.”

“Veneno” by Andzej Gavriss

A man struggles with the death of his son in this epic short by writer-director Andzej Gavriss (previously featured here). Shot on a small coastal island with all local actors, Gavriss stayed in the village for months, getting to know the people and training them how to act. Safety was also a concern, as Gavriss explains:

“We were shooting open water in the Pacific ocean with a 7 year old boy and in the Mangrove forest river full of 6 meter long crocodiles so we were not allowed to shoot there after dusk but were lucky enough to get the permission on our own risk. I had to pass diving lessons to be able to scout the area.”

“Slowset” by Nick & Chloé

Photography and filmmaking duo Chloé Claverie and Nick West (aka Nick & Chloé) come to the defence of slowdancing in this charmingly nostalgic short. Set to a dystopian track by French producer Sam Tiba, “Slowset” sees a cast of Berlin teens invited to a “quaratine zone” where they can “practice the art of the Slowdance without ridicule.” As Nick and Chloé argue:

“The Slowdance is nearing extinction. We must act with urgency! Here is our call to arms to nurture and revive that classic courting ritual. The contemporary dance and music world have turned their back on this mystical, awkward but pragmatic way to encounter the “object of your desire”! … These days we are “too cool for school”, our gaze fixed downwards on clever phones and screens missing the human life in our proximity. We all need a little push of encouragement to get up from our chair and ask bravely to that guy or that girl over there, to dance with us.”
