A heartbreaking portrait of gun violence told from the perspective of those left behind by New York-based director Charlie Mysak. A crude animation style perfectly complements the strangeness of Kayla — the mysterious occupant of apartment 1A, temporary roommate of director Travis Wood and subject of his latest short.

Two young people take desperate measures to escape their problems in this video for Tiwayo’s track “Wild” by Polish director and cinematographer Filip Zaluska.

Surreal visuals and bodily contortions speak to the ruins of a tainted love affair in this video for China’s track “Venom” by London-based directors David Strindberg and Josefin Malmén of BABYBABY  (previously featured here).

Cute video for Joey Dosik’s track “Inside Voice” by director Carlos Lopez Estrada (previously featured here).

Brilliant DIY effects in this video for Gengahr by London-based director Jamie Whitby (previously featured here). The result of over 2500 16mm frames individually cut out and set against hand-painted backgrounds by Katy Beveridge, “I’ll Be Waiting” highlights the relationships of three real-life couples. Actually, as Whitby shared with us, the DoP Spike and producer Scarlett who made up their little crew of three, just so happen to be a couple too! As for the process itself, Whitby explains:

“The cutting out I did pretty much frame by frame with masks in After Effects over about four 16-hour days. I originally wanted to do it with paper and an actual scalpel but quickly realised that wouldn’t have been possible in the time frame we were working with. It was still painfully laborious – the temptation to let After Effects automate the rotoscoping was real but in the tests I did beforehand it looked too digital. It’s quite a delicate balancing act – if you’re too careful you lose the lovely mistakes that provide that analogue feel; if you’re too messy the silhouettes end up making no sense. One thing I didn’t probably didn’t think about enough was couples with arms entwined – cutting those out was a real fucker, involving multiple layers and masks.”

An experimental short exploring the creative process of electronic music producer, Switchdance, by filmmaker Filipe Penajoia from Lisbon, Portugal. As he shared with us:

“From the birth of the idea, through the conception and final outcome, this visual narrative depicts how this dynamic fragments the boundaries between the conscious and sub-conscious, the palpable and the abstract.”

Some beautiful shots in this poetic short by filmmaker Dillon M. Banda. Shot on location in a series of monasteries and temples across Nepal, “Spirit” follows footage of young and old as they go about their daily routines while a wistful narrator questions the nature of her own existence.
