Helena Deland – “Claudion”

Lovely mood to this video for Montréal-based singer-songwriter Helena Deland (previously featured here). Directed by Brownwyn Ford, with choreography by Rachel Giles, “Claudion” stars Deland and her cousin Claudia Picard-Deland:

“The song is overall about the constancy of my relying on and trusting in my cousin Claudia. I marvel at how our relationship has remained essentially similar going through the extremes of childhood and adolescence and into the heavier nuances of adulthood. I have no footage of the choreography we’d make up and practice for months before we’d present them to our dads’ side of the family at Christmas, so this is a selfish homage to one of the ways we’d spend endless time around the age of 10.”

Tōth – “No Reason”

A charmingly random hand-drawn animation for Tōth by Massachusetts-born, Los Angeles-based artist Amanda Bonaiuto (previously featured here). Inspired by the idea of parades and pining for love, “No Reason” works to build up anticipation like the climax of a musical. As Bonaiuto further explains:

“I was drawn to the enticing slowness of the song, and it made me think of the film Dreams by Akira Kurosawa, Cab Calloway’s dancing, and some of the moods in Marcel Dzama’s drawings. I decided on featuring birds as an innocent threat from the beginning, paired with a character who seems suspicious of them and unsure about their desires. I liked that the human to bird interface could become a source of happiness for no reason.”

Premiere: “Nobody Knows” by Nolan Wilson Goff

A fantastic portrait of adolescence and small town life by Texas-born, Los Angeles-based writer and director Nolan Wilson Goff. “Nobody Knows” tells the story of a quiet high schooler reckoning with the guilt of his brother’s death. Shot like a series of photographs, the film offers an observational point of view where it becomes less about blame and more about how characters relate to, and have been forged by, their environment. As Goff beautifully explains:

“I had to move all the way to California to discover I wanted to tell stories about home along. It took me a long time to realize this though. So bringing cast & crew to Texas was a literal coming home for me. And telling the story of the place was as important to me as telling the story of Ross and what happens to him.”
